Issued: July 01 2012
Cooley, a US law firm with roots in Silicon Valley, has announced that newly-elected partner Christina Zhang and associate Benjamin Qiu will join the firm’s Shanghai office. Zhang and Qiu will be part of the firm’s business and technology practice group.

Zhang joins Cooley from Johnson Controls, where since 2008 she served as vice president and Asia Pacific general counsel of its Power Solutions business. She provided legal support for all aspects of the business in the region, with a heavy focus on China, including selection of investment vehicles, building “Greenfield” manufacturing facilities, setting up joint ventures, licensing, acquisitions, distribution and marketing, environmental protection, crisis management, antitrust, trade compliance, government investigations and employment.

Initially, Zhang will be resident in Cooley’s Palo Alto office, pending completion of registration formalities
with China’s Ministry of Justice. Prior to joining Johnson Controls, Zhang spent ten years as in-house counsel in the life sciences industry.

Prior to joining Cooley, Qiu was senior counsel and fund director at Innovation Works, an investment fund
and start-up incubator for Chinese companies in the mobile computing, e-commerce and cloud computing
sectors.
