Japan Platform For Patent Information Will Start March 23, 2015

Issued: September 08 2014

As prescribed in the Intellectual Property Basic Act, an important intellectual property policy is to undertake the necessary measures to provide patent information for the users promptly using the internet (Article 20 of Intellectual Property Basic Act).

Recently, against the backdrop of focused R&D investment and smooth overseas business activities by Japanese companies, the users’ needs for patent information, which is a huge source of information on technologies, are becoming more sophisticated and diversified.

Also, regarding patent information which is a huge source of information on technologies, it was decided in the Intellectual Property Promotion Plan for 2014 that the Industrial Property Digital Library (IPDL) will be renovated and then a new service to provide intellectual property information will be developed in order to support such users as small and medium enterprises (SMEs), venture companies, etc. amid such focused R&D investment and smooth overseas business activities.

As for patent information, in order to meet the increasingly sophisticated and diversified needs, the Japan Platform for Patent Information (J-PlatPat), which is a new service to provide patent information, will be provided from March 23, 2015.

The J-PlatPat will offer user-friendly services and play the role of a new information base to provide patent information, including information on designs and trademarks, through such means as enhanced search-service functions, a renovated user interface, cooperation with external service providers, and a service to download bulk data on patent publications, etc (for private information service providers). In the future, in order to provide the enhanced services more widely, further consideration will be given to the feasibility of more expeditious provision of information, references to patent family information, and cooperation in services with other foreign IP offices.
