Guangdong Expecting the First IP Court in China

Issued: April 30 2014

As pledged at the Third Plenum of the Communist Party of China's 18th Central Committee, Guangdong is expecting China’s first IP court to be set up there.

Zhu Xiaodan, governor of Guangdong, said that he hoped the Supreme Court would set up the country's first IPR court in Guangdong, where one fourth of China's IPR disputes happen, according to Xinhua’s report.

"The most pressing task in Guangdong's industrial transformation is to enhance enterprises' ability to innovate. Legal justice is crucial to the protection and encouragement of innovation," the story quoted Zhu.

The first IP court could be approved soon, and three Guangdong cities: Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, had filed proposals to build the first court, according to Xu Chunjian, a senior judge handling IP protection in Guangdong's high court, cited by the South Morning China Post.

Xu said the new court's presence would be important for companies hoping to enter the planned free-trade zone connecting Guangdong province with Hong Kong and Macau.
