The intellectual property system in Malaysia is well-established with relevant legislation in place, said the director of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) office in Singapore.

Director Denis Croze told the Malaysian news agency Bernama that this has allowed for a certain level of IP sophistication to be achieved within the Malaysian business and academic communities, and also the public at large.

“By striking the right balance between the interest of innovators and the wider public interest, the IP system aims to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish,” he told Bernama, the national news agency of Malaysia.

He noted that having a balanced IP system would encourage foreign companies to bring their technology and investment to the country, as their IP rights can be adequately protected.

“Society also benefits from an effective IP system as it can gain access to new technologies in vital areas such as healthcare, food production and environmentally friendly technologies,” Croze said.

Malaysia, which Joined WIPO in 1989, organized workshops on building respect for IP and on the management of IP in the advertising industry in the last year.

"Malaysia is indeed active in efforts to increase awareness and respect for IP," Croze said.
