In consultation with the World Intellectual Property Organization, Myanmar is reviewing, drafting and expecting to launch its new trademark laws around early 2014, according to the officials drafting the law.

While trademarks already registered under the existing law will be protected for three years from the date the new law becomes effective, trademark owners are encouraged to register their trademarks with the Myanmar IP Office when the new law is effective in order to extend their protection timeframe for more than three years.

After the trademark application is made, it will be examined by the registrar. If the mark is qualified, the IP Office will issue a receipt of acknowledgement. After that receipt, the registrar will check if the receipt is issued correctly according to the new law and, if so, a certificate of registered mark will be issued. Should it not be correct under the new law, the trademark application will be cancelled.
